How to use this website

Using this website is pretty simple, and much easier than trying to use the Quizlet website with a screen reader. Simply paste your Quizlet link into the box above and click Make Accessible or press the enter key. Your Quizlet will open in a simple, accessible table with two columns (the one on the left for the terms and the one on the right for the definitions). The terms and definitions will be tagged with the correct language, so your screen reader will hopefully pronounce it all correctly. Navigate around your Quizlet using the usual table navigation commands. If you don't know how to navigate a table yet, this is the time to find out!

Accepted URL formats

If you are having trouble importing a new set, make sure that you enter a Quizlet URL that is in a format we accept.
We accept full Quizlet links like:

We do NOT accept any links like: To make sets using these links accessible, simply visit the link, and copy the link which appears in your browser address bar after a few seconds. This should, fingers crossed, be one of the accepted link formats. If it is not, then contact us to let us know.

Why is this website needed?

This website is needed to help blind and visually impaired people view Quizlet sets (sets containing electronic flashcards). Many schools use these to help with language learning. However, they are not accessible.

What we would like is for blind and visually impaired people to just visit the Quizlet link themselves and learn the vocab like one of their sighted classmates would, but sadly Quizlet does not make that possible right now. Here are some reasons why it is not possible:

  1. The Quizlet-recommended way to accessibly view a set is to turn off your screen reader and use theirs. This presents a number of problems, including not being able to spell out words or connect a braille display. In addition, their screen reader needs a mouse click on a tiny button to enable. You should not need to switch screen readers just to view a webpage, as that makes your life a lot more difficult with preferences such as speech rate, and how much punctuation is spoken out. Even if this audio access mode on Quizlet allowed for everything mentioned above, users would still have to manually input all their screen reader settings again, which we think is not a sensible way forward.
  2. If you try to keep your existing screen reader running, it reads everything out in English (whatever the actual language of the words) and so it makes audio virtually useless for language sets. Also, the braille display will not know which language braille code to use.
  3. The Quizlet website includes several unlabelled buttons for each term, which makes it very difficult to know what the buttons mean.
  4. To use Quizlet's one and only keyboard shortcut (space to flip cards) you have to turn off your screen reader virtual cursor and give up on navigating the page by elements (e.g. headings, links).
  5. Large pop-ups need to be closed by clicking on an image and all the headings on the page disappear until this process is complete.
  6. The Quizlet app running on a BrailleNote Touch (a specialist device made for blind people) shows each term and definition twice in a row and you have to click on the right version to flip the card (if you click the wrong version which anyone would do by accident, you get put into an inaccessible screen largely made up of emojis).
  7. The Quizlet app on the BrailleNote touch and other Android devices will not let you click the "Audio" button for a card, and you have to have an iPhone next to you for this.

Due to the points above you can imagine that using Quizlet in the way everyone else does is nearly impossible for me, and that is why this website exists. It would be better if Quizlet was accessible enough that this website wasn't needed, but sadly right now Quizlet is a long way away from meeting this goal.
